Communities on the front line of climate change rarely caused it, but they carry most of the cost. GEHESE works on both sides of the problem: helping communities adapt to changes already underway, and supporting the restoration work that slows further damage.
Climate awareness and education. Understanding local climate risk is the first step to managing it. We run community education programs that translate climate science into practical, local decision-making.
Nature-based solutions. Where possible, we favor restoring natural systems, wetlands, forests, watersheds, over purely engineered fixes, since they tend to be more durable and lower cost to maintain.
Tree planting and ecosystem restoration. Degraded land is restored through targeted, community-led tree planting and habitat rehabilitation, chosen for what actually suits the local ecosystem rather than generic planting targets.
Climate-smart agriculture. We work with farmers on practices that maintain yields under more unpredictable rainfall and temperature, drought-tolerant crop choices, soil and water conservation, and diversified planting.
Urban resilience and climate policy advocacy. Beyond individual communities, we engage in advocacy to push climate resilience into local and national planning, not just emergency response after the fact.
