Waste is too often treated as a dead end. GEHESE works to make it a starting point instead, building systems where discarded materials become raw inputs for new value: compost for farmers, protein for livestock feed, income for waste collectors, and functioning small businesses that did not exist before.
Community-based waste innovation hubs. We set up local hubs where communities sort, process and add value to waste on site, keeping the economic benefit close to the people doing the work rather than exporting it elsewhere.

Composting and organic waste valorization. Organic waste is diverted from open dumping and landfill into compost production, improving soil health for smallholder farmers while cutting the methane emissions that come from organic matter rotting in the open.
Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production. We support BSF farming as a fast, low-cost way to convert organic waste into protein-rich animal feed, giving farmers and small entrepreneurs a genuine income stream from material that would otherwise be discarded.
Recycling enterprises and waste value chains. Beyond individual projects, we work on strengthening the full chain, collection, sorting, processing and market access, so recycling businesses can operate reliably and grow.

Green jobs. Every part of this pillar is built around creating real, dignified employment, particularly for youth and women, in sectors that did not previously offer structured work opportunities.
